Moving Missteps and Exposing Relocation Scams

Tom Liberatore Today’s last guest is Tom Liberatore, Director of the Office of Enforcement and Compliance with The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Today, our guest will discuss Moving Missteps and Exposing Relocation Scams. Did you know that nationwide, there were more than 7,500 complaints against moving companies and brokers in 2022, more than double the 3,000+ complaints filed in 2015? To crack down on fraudsters looking to extort consumers by demanding additional fees, holding property hostage, or simply not complying with federal safety and consumer protection regulations, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has ramped up their efforts against scam movers and brokers.

Last year, FMCSA launched “Operation: Protect Your Move,” during which the agency devoted additional legal resources to working with attorneys general and consumer protection offices over a three-week period. Their investigation targeted about a third of the country and resulted in compliance actions that closed more than 490 National Consumer Complaint Database complaints.
