Mental Health Awareness Month and “Talk Away the Dark” Campaign

Today, he discusses Mental Health Awareness Month, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and their efforts to empower people to have brave conversations about mental health. Victor emphasizes the importance of directly asking about suicide if struggles are not improving as part of their new campaign, Talk Away the Dark. These efforts to decrease suicide deaths are more important than ever, especially with the CDC reporting that the provisional number of suicides in 2022 (49,449) was 3% higher than in 2021 (48,183).

Victor also serves as Director of Soul Shop for Black Churches, an interactive workshop that equips faith community leaders to minister to congregants impacted by suicidal desperation. He is a nationally recognized speaker on issues regarding health equity and access to healthcare, particularly as they relate to individuals living with mental health challenges. Victor currently serves on the Steering Committee of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. He also serves on the Board of Advisors for the East Carolina University School of Social Work and the Council of Advisors for St. Augustine’s University.
